Brora is a scheduled stopping point on the John o’ Groats Trail.

With a varied selection of accommodation and places to eat, Brora makes a lovely place to explore as it has an amazing history.

It worth noting if staying in Brora why not catch the train to Golspie or Helmsdale and walk back, please think about tide times as well as the weather.

Golspie to Brora is a distance of  6.2 miles with an estimated time of 3 to 3.5 hours.

On route you take in the distinctive Dunrobin Castle walking along the shore outside the walls to its impressive formal gardens. After leaving the Dunrobin woodland your walking through fields. (Please remember to keep dogs under control when livestock are grazing).

After a couple of fields look to your left for Dun Liath broch a well preserved iron age structure over 2000 years old. A small detour to visit.

As you approach Brora you’ll come across the old World War II radio intercept station, now a camping and caravan site.

The deep inlet for the river Brora has enabled a small harbor which years go by supported a healthy fishing industry for the village.

Brora to Helmsdale this is 12.8 miles, 20.8 km with an estimate 5.5 to 6.5 hours in summer.

The first part of this route takes you across one end of Brora’s links golf course to  the beach, at low tide there is a fantastic sandy beach for approx 2 miles alternatively a path along the dunes is available, if bird nesting season please keep dogs under control.

You continue heading North between the shore and the railway, with a combination of foot bridges or stepping stone to cross the many burns.
